About Dudley

Living in Dudley means being part of a diverse and growing community with a rich cultural tapestry and strong sense of belonging. Dudley’s blend of history, nature, and progress offers something for everyone, from the excitement of its town centres to the peaceful green spaces.

A Borough of Character and Charm

Dudley is uniquely spread across four main towns, each with its own identity and attractions:

  • Dudley – Home to the stunning 12th-century Dudley Castle, where history comes to life.
  • Brierley Hill – Known for the bustling Merry Hill Shopping Centre and the Waterfront, a lively hub of business and leisure.
  • Halesowen – A town full of charm, offering scenic beauty at Leasowes Park, one of England’s oldest landscaped gardens.
  • Stourbridge – Famous for its Glass Quarter, with over 400 years of glass-making heritage and craftsmanship.

Each town brings its unique flavour to the borough, with smaller towns and villages adding to Dudley’s warm and welcoming local atmosphere.

Accessible, Connected, and Growing

Getting around Dudley and beyond is easy. Dudley is only a 30-minute train ride from Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Worcester, making it well-connected while retaining its distinct identity. Major road networks and ongoing transport investments, including the development of the new Metro line, are creating even better access and connectivity. By 2025, a new tram link will bring Dudley closer to the West Midlands Metro, enabling more residents to easily commute and explore.

Dudley’s Natural Beauty and Green Spaces

Though primarily urban, Dudley takes pride in its green spaces, with nearly 18% of the borough designated as green belt and 14% accessible as open spaces. Nature lovers can enjoy ten Sites of Special Scientific Interest, two National Nature Reserves, eight Local Nature Reserves, and the scenic 15-mile canal network. Conservation areas and listed buildings, numbering nearly 600, showcase the borough’s dedication to preserving its architectural heritage and natural beauty.

Rich Heritage, Vibrant Attractions

Dudley is a place where history meets modernity. Attractions like the Black Country Living Museum offer a chance to step back in time, complete with costumed characters and engaging displays. The Dudley Zoo and Castle invites you to explore both wildlife and historic ruins, while Dudley Canal & Caverns offers adventures through impressive limestone mines. In Stourbridge, the Glass Quarter celebrates centuries of craftsmanship, with studios and museums that keep the area’s legacy alive.

With the development of new educational institutions and advanced training centres, Dudley is focused on building a skilled workforce, opening doors to meaningful careers, and helping people thrive in a borough filled with opportunity.

A Community That Cares

Dudley Council is committed to building a community that everyone can take pride in. Guided by the Council Plan 2022-25, the borough is working towards four priorities:

  1. A Borough of Opportunity – Providing everyone with the resources and support to reach their full potential.
  2. A Safe and Healthy Borough – Ensuring safety and well-being for all.
  3. A Borough of Enterprise and Ambition – Fostering a thriving economy and creating spaces for innovation.
  4. A Place to Call Home – Making Dudley one of the best places to live and work in the UK.
